Kumu Hula Kanoelani Galiza

Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawai'i, Kanoelani learned hula at a young age. Her formal training and studies in the Hawaiian Language, Hula, Tahitian and New Zealand Maori dances are accredited to her Na Kumu Hula (teachers). She has studied under the direction of many famous hula teachers in Hawai'i for the past 30 years. Since 1980, Kanoelani has entered numerous competitions, such as the famous and prestigious "Merrie Monarch Hula Festival"(Hilo, Hawaii), Kona Hula Festival, Kamehameha Hula Festival, Las Vegas Hula Festival and California Hula Festival. She also studied two years of Modern Dance at Leeward Community College in Honolulu and performed at Leeward Community College Theater many times.

In January 1994, Kanoelani and her husband Joaquin Galiza moved to Washington State. In October of that year Kanoelani opened her own hula school, "Hula Halau 'O Kealaakua Naniloa Mana'oakamai. In October 2002, Kanoelani and her Alaka'i Makanaalohano'eau Freitas opened "Hula Halau 'O Kealaakua Naniloa Mana'oakamai 'Elua. She also enjoys performing with her students in many special occasions.

In January 2002, The Pacific Northwest Ka 'Ohana Aloha Hula Festival was born. It is a unique festival created with the purpose to preserve, educate and perpetuate the celebration of Hawaiian, Native Polynesian and Native American cultures. The main focus of Kanoelani and the Ka 'Ohana board members is teaching our children the dance, the language and the history of their ancestry. The Ka 'Ohana Aloha (the love of family) Hula Festival encompasses the spirit to create a family experience with Aloha (Love). In August 2006, the Second Annual Pacific Northwest Ka 'Ohana Aloha Hula Festival was a huge success.

In June 2006, Kanoelani was invited to be the main Principal Adjudicator for the "Festival Polynesia/Pacific Rim" in Canada. Her expertise in the Polynesia Culture, Dance Technique, Language, Music and Entertainment Specialist was introduced in Canada.
